UK Sanctions Russian GRU Officers Over Cyber Attacks
Over 20 officers and units targeted in major counter‑intelligence move
The UK has imposed sanctions on more than 20 Russian GRU officers and three military intelligence units in response to a sustained campaign of cyberattacks across Europe, including attacks linked to the Mariupol theatre strike, hacking of Estonia’s government and the German Bundestag, and interference in the 2016 US election.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy described the GRU's actions as part of a concerted effort to destabilize Europe and threaten British national security.
Units 29155, 26165 and 74455 have been specifically targeted, along with individuals tied to disinformation campaigns in Africa.
The move has drawn joint condemnation from NATO and the EU.
