Anastasiia Drevynytska, a 20-year-old Ukrainian, sought refuge in the UK but was scammed over her visa. Despite her efforts, the Home Office has asked her to return to Ukraine, where war persists. Criticism has arisen over the UK's handling of the situation.
Anastasiia Drevynytska, a 20-year-old Ukrainian woman, sought refuge in the UK to join her parents, Svitlana and Volodymyr, who had already arrived under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
Upon her arrival, Drevynytska discovered she had been scammed by a Ukrainian man who offered to handle her paperwork for a fee.
The Home Office granted her a six-month temporary leave, expiring on June 19.
Despite efforts to rectify her situation, Drevynytska has been asked to return to Ukraine.
The Home Office's letter highlights that her application does not meet the scheme’s requirements and offers no right to appeal.
This situation has drawn criticism from immigration experts like Luke Piper of the Work Rights Centre, who points out the UK's commitment to Ukraine and criticizes the government's shift in policy.
