US Diplomat Condemns Racism Against Indian Americans
A senior US diplomat has condemned recent 'vile and racist attacks' on Indian Americans following remarks on Vice President Kamala Harris's origins. Richard Verma, himself an Indian American, emphasized that these attacks threaten US-Indian ties and have no place in society. Vice President Harris, with her Indian and Jamaican heritage, could become the first president of South Asian heritage if elected.
Washington: On Monday, senior US diplomat Richard Verma strongly condemned recent 'vile and racist attacks' on Indian Americans after derogatory remarks were made about Vice President Kamala Harris's origins.
Although Verma did not explicitly mention Harris, his allusion was clear in his speech at the Hudson Institute think tank.
He emphasized that such attacks threaten US-Indian ties and have no place in American society.
Verma, an Indian American and former US ambassador to India, highlighted both nations' advocacy for social justice.
The remarks in question were traced to far-right conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who suggested Harris would make the White House 'smell like curry' if elected.
Harris, with her mother from India and father from Jamaica, could become the first US president of South Asian heritage and the first woman president if elected on November 5.
