USVI announces 130th death tied to Covid-19

As Covid-19 cases from a recent post-Crucian Christmas Festival surge continue to decline, the [US] Virgin Islands Department of Health (DoH) late Friday, February 10, 2023, announced the 130th death in the territory tied to the disease.

"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the [US] Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s one hundred and thirtieth (130th) death related to COVID-19. The deceased is an 85-year-old female on St Croix," DoH said.

The department said it continues to work to slow the spread of the coronavirus and encouraged the public to become fully vaccinated and boosted.

"Residents are also urged to remember to follow all precautionary measures by practicing social distancing around persons with whom you do not reside, wearing a mask in crowded public areas, washing your hands often with soap and warm water, and cleaning frequently used areas thoroughly," the health department said.

As of Friday, there were 101 active Covid-19 cases territory, with 47 on St Croix, 46 on St Thomas, and 8 on St John, according to DoH. 

The territory's seven-day positive rate stood at 6.4 percent.
