VG business owner awarded $100K contract for works on VG arena

Basketball and other recreational activities will soon return to the heart of Virgin Gorda now that a Ninth District construction company has been awarded a $100,000 contract to complete phase two of works to the Jeffrey Caines Sports Arena on the sister island.

During a contract signing ceremony on Thursday, Alic George of AGS Construction Limited was awarded his first-ever contract from the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA).

His company edged out two other competing bidders after successfully advancing through the RDA’s procurement processes.

“Invitations to tender were sent to 27 general contractors who had registered for our procurement workshop on Virgin Gorda in May 2020. However, three bids were received by the submission deadline and following a preliminary and detailed examination, AGS Construction Limited was determined to offer the best value for money and therefore, they were recommended for the award of contract,” stated RDA’s Director of Procurement John Primo.

Looking forward to the completion

Sports Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley said he is looking forward to the completion of the facility to allow the resumption of major sporting activities on the island.

He said: “We know how important basketball is to Virgin Gorda and we are hopeful that by next summer that we can have a summer jam.”

“This government under the leadership of the premier provided the finances, we’ve made the partnerships necessary to be able to repair recreational facilities in every single district, from the First District to the Ninth District and we thank those persons who’ve made that possible,” Dr Wheatley added.

Means a lot to VG

Also sharing similar sentiments was Ninth District Representative Vincent Wheatley.

“Jeffrey Caines Arena isn’t simply a construction project, it means a lot to the people of Virgin Gorda because we don’t have all the activities like the other islands like on Tortola, so basketball is the lifeline of Virgin Gorda. It’s where we come together and fellowship and enjoy ourselves while getting exercise.”

In addition to the construction contract, No Limit Construction company was announced as the winning bidder of a $54,000 contract to furnish the arena with all the necessary sporting equipment.
