VI’s fate in hands of UK Monarch ‘is unacceptable’ in 2021 - Skelton-Cline

Radio talkshow host Claude O. Skelton-Cline has called 'unacceptable' the reserved powers of the Queen as laid out in the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007 to make laws for peace and order in the territory.

Section 119 of the Constitution says there is reserved to Her Majesty full power to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the Virgin Islands. This, according to Mr Skelton-Cline, is unacceptable in 2021.

“Our fate is in the hands, still remains in the hands of her Majesty, the Representative of the UK. Our fate and our destiny ultimately, according to our very constitution, lies in the hands of the people of the United Kingdom, that is unacceptable,” he said.

Claude O. Skelton-Cline said the UK in theory has recognized that subjugation is wrong, however, their behavior has not changed over 300 years while calling in Virgin Islanders to recognize that locals have been taking care of the Virgin Islands and themselves for years.

UK still has power over VI after slavery - Skelton-Cline

Skelton-Cline said the ancestors of those who enslaved the ancestors of Virgin Islanders still have the power of the territory, and that should not be the case. "How could it be in this 21st century, in 2021, how could it be that we are conformable, that we see nothing wrongs with that continuing to be the case?” he questioned.

He said that no people of the earth should be subject or slaves of another, “It is fundamentally wrong, it is morally wrong and obscene to be the subjects, to be subordinate,” to others he said.

Skelton-Cline said the UK in theory has recognised that subjugation is wrong; however, their behaviour has not changed over 300 years.

The commentator called on Virgin Islanders to recognise that locals have been taking care of the Virgin Islands and themselves for years.

He also called on Government, the Opposition, religious leaders, business leaders, and everyone with influence to come together and fight for justice, freedom, and independence on behalf of the people of the territory.
