VIslander Jackson Christopher stands as Honour Guard @ funeral of John R. Lewis

When political and civil rights icon, John R. Lewis was laid to rest on Thursday, July 30, 2020, Virgin Islander and US Police Officer, Jackson Christopher was there to stand as honour guard.

Christopher, a native of the Virgin Islands, is an officer working in Atlanta, Georgia and had previously served in the US Army.

Jackson is the nephew of former VI politican Mr J. Alvin Christoper and has close family ties in the Brewers Bay area, with his grandmother, uncles and aunts all from that area.

Lewis hailed as a freedom fighter


John R. Lewis was laid to rest at the South-View Cemetery following a funeral service that took place at Dr Martin Luther King Jr's former church in Atlanta.

Cited as one one of the most courageous figures in the civil rights movement, Mr Lewis inspired many after dedicating his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he calls "The Beloved Community” in the US.

His work and life has inspired many around the world, including persons in the Virgin Islands such as Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who called the late Lewis a decorated soldier in the struggle for justice and equality.
