Wade Smith back as Customs Commissioner!
After resigning the post to contest the February 2019 General Elections, Wade Smith is back as Commissioner of Customs.
His appointment took effect last Friday, August 7 following approval from the Governor Augustus Jaspert.
The circumstances of his reappointment are not known.
Meanwhile, a media release from the Office of the Deputy Governor said Smith will be responsible for planning and directing the operations of the Customs Department. He is also responsible for leading his department to monitor marine traffic in the BVI while liaising with other enforcement bodies to ensure the prohibition of controlled substances.
The Customs boss had responsibility for these tasks for 15 years before resigning to enter politics. He unsuccessfully contested the Fifth District seat under the new political party, Progressive Virgin Islands Movement — more commonly known as PVIM.
He lost to government minister Kye Rymer who had also resigned his post as Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles to run for political office.
During Smith’s time in law enforcement, he is said to have served as a member of the High-Intensity Drug Traffic Agency, Caribbean Law Enforcement Intelligence Council (CLEIC), Chairman of the Caribbean Customs Law Enforcement Council (CCLEC), Joint Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Advisory Committee, Chairman of the National Intelligence Committee, and National Intelligence Coordinating and Tasking Group.
