Woman Protests Strict Dress Code at Iranian University
Incident Occurs Amid Rising Defiance Against Hijab Laws
A young woman stripped to her underwear at the Islamic Azad University in Iran on Saturday, reportedly in protest against the country's strict Islamic dress code.
Videos and media reports from the location indicate that security guards detained the unidentified woman.
Amir Mahjob, a university spokesperson, stated on social media platform X that the woman appeared to be under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder, as evaluated at the police station.
However, social media commentary suggested that her action was a deliberate protest against the mandatory hijab, reflecting growing defiance among women since the 2022 death of a young Iranian Kurdish woman in morality police custody.
The daily newspaper Hamshahri reported that the woman might be transferred to a mental hospital after investigations conclude.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions over dress code enforcement in Iran.
