Your First Look at Jennifer Lopez's JLo Beauty Skin-Care Line

Your First Look at Jennifer Lopez's JLo Beauty Skin-Care Line

J.Lo's glow has been bottled. Allure talked to the star exclusively about her first eight products, launching on New Year's Day.

Here's the least surprising fact, possibly, ever: "The number one thing that people ask me about, more than movies or music or anything, is my skin," says Jennifer Lopez, 51, who, for the record, has been in 31 movies and released eight studio albums and 47 singles. "It's always been on my mind, and it's taken 20 years to realize this dream."

The "it" in this case is JLo Beauty, her namesake line, launching with eight skin-care products, including a gel-cream cleanser, a sheet mask, and an eye cream. And it's all about glow. It's basically like Mister Rogers coming out with a collection of red cardigans, or the ocean introducing a line called Saline.

"The hero ingredient is a secret from my mom and aunt: olive oil. It's nature's secret ingredient we don't use enough of, but you also don't want to smell like a salad. So [the JLo Beauty Olive Complex] is a modernized version [with] olive-derived squalane, fermented oil, olive leaf extract, and extra-virgin olive oil," Lopez tells Allure.

The blend figures prominently in the star of the star's line: a serum called That JLo Glow Multitasking Serum, which also contains brightening rice sake ferment. We can attest that the stuff is aptly named: After pressing the silky formula into our skin, we looked - and felt - one degree closer to J.Lo. "The serum quickly absorbed into my skin without leaving behind any greasy residue," says Allure beauty editor Paige Stables. "My skin was instantly more radiant."

You can also credit that ultra-moisturizing olive-oil cocktail for the burst of hydration your skin receives after you massage on JLo Beauty That Blockbuster Wonder Cream. "It feels like a luxe - yet lightweight - blanket for your skin," says Stables. Plus, it's packed with antioxidant-rich, yeast-derived ferment, peptides, and everyone's favorite: hyaluronic acid.

Glowiness may be what Lopez's epidermis is famous for, but it was not her sole priority when she created her line. When she was in her early 20s, "I went to two dermatologists, one in New York and one in L.A.," she says. "The first doctor said, 'The best thing you can do is use sunscreen every single day.' I was like, 'Well, I live in New York, and sometimes you don't need sunscreen.' He said, 'You need sunscreen. Every. Single. Day.' That has been a big secret to my skin success, so I wanted to make [sun protection] a big part of the line."

And it is: JLo Beauty That Big Screen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Moisturizer helps shield skin from UV damage, while also keeping skin supple with hyaluronic acid and glycerin. (Oh, and what was the other dermatologist's advice? To start Botox: "Needless to say, that relationship did not work out.")

It's no secret that J.Lo is the embodiment of glamour, but she is also a regular person (kinda). "I wear tons of makeup and I like to be able to wash it off at the end of the day [with That Hit Single Gel Cream Cleanser] because, honestly, my favorite face is my face with no makeup. And I always love to discover her at the end of the day again," says Lopez. "That's the J.Lo at home, you know - a bun in the hair, only these products on my face. And that's it. I'm just like everybody else when I'm at home. I want to feel good."

And getting to the point of feeling good about her brand took time. Skin-care lines don't just happen - even if you're Jennifer Lopez. "We took two years just to create the serum. I kept sending it back," she says. "We went over a hundred rounds of product development to get everything right."

So is she a perfectionist? There's a pause…and then an almost inaudible, "Maybe."

JLo Beauty is available starting January 1, 2021, on jlobeauty.com.
