Zander Murray, the first openly gay male Scottish footballer, is ready to retire from the sport. He came out in 2022, making headlines and beginning a journey toward a new path after soccer.
Recognizing it's time to step away from the game, the 32-year-old forward has accomplished his goals, including playing in the league.
Murray, who faced challenges with his sexuality, notably came out via
Facebook while playing for Gala Fairydean Rovers, where he scored over 100 goals. He later joined Bonnyrigg Rose, fulfilling a dream to compete in the Scottish Professional Football League, but returned to Gala to end his career, a club he cherishes deeply.
He has expressed gratitude for the support from Gala's management, team, and fans as they have made him feel secure and accepted. His dedication to raising awareness led to a BBC Scotland documentary on homophobia in football, which garnered an incredible response and showed him the strength of storytelling.
Facing the difficulties of fame, Murray led the 2023 Pride march in Edinburgh. He's since engaged with young footballers, speaking on homophobia and inclusivity through his work with the Time for Inclusive Education charity and serving as an ambassador at the 2023 Gay Games in Hong Kong.
As he transitions from football, he's begun corporate speaking engagements and is considering coaching women's football, given its inclusivity compared to the men's game. Although he wished his coming out would inspire more gay players to do the same, he understands the challenges and is still faced with online abuse.
As Murray reflects on the past year, he transitions from fear to excitement for the future, finding a new passion in making a difference and vowing to continue supporting even just one person.
