$100,000 allocated to retrain tourism workers
As the territory prepares to reopen on December 1, the government will be allocating some $100,000 to retrain and certify workers in the hospitality industry to ensure they know safety procedures that will prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Premier Fahie, who made the announcement in an interview with ZBVI, said the training will be done by the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).
“They (the training) will be done on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on Tortola, and Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. We’ll also be doing it online,” the Premier explained.
He added that certification will be done for service professionals in many areas including restaurants, kitchens, front desks, the craft industry, yachting sector, and taxi services.
“Working in COVID-19, it’s a totally different era than working before. The cheque will be turned over this Friday and the classes are already scheduled to start on Tuesday the 20th of October,” Premier Fahie said.
Currently, there is only one active COVID-19 case in the BVI.
Earlier this week, Premier Fahie announced that visitors will only be required to quarantine for a ‘short period’ once the territory reopens on December 1.
However, he said visitors will have to undergo at least two COVID-19 tests.
