2 Softball leaders knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten

After his unbeaten Synergy women’s team suffered their first loss of the season to the Lady Hawks on Saturday, Neville “Sheep” Smith returned to the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park on Sunday, fired a 3-hit shutout and Storm disrupted Power Outage following and earlier setback, as both league leaders fell in VI Softball Baseball Association Atoms-Astros Softball League.
“Well it’s a well deserved win for the team. I must commend Sheep, he pitched a master game there,” player Coach Allen “Woodrow” Smith told Island Sun Sports following his team’s 5-0 victory over Power Outage. “We know we have it in us, we just have to stay consistent, stay with the hitting, the hitting is key for our team right now, because that used to be our weakest point, we’re finding ourselves now and we’re in contention.”

Smith said they put up early runs, something they had not been doing and it puts their opponent under extra pressure and they have to play from behind. “Once you’re in front, you’re more relaxed,” he noted. “This victory showed our team that we can beat any team any time, but most importantly, it showed the other team they can be beaten.”

Power Outage Coach Roy Barry told Island Sun Sports that his team wasn’t consistent on Sunday, so the best team won.

“We made some mental mistakes and a lot of times I put the bunts on and somehow, the players seemed to have missed the sign,” he said. “So, with the pitcher getting that confidence, we’re not pulling him off the mound to move and get tired, he got relaxed—that was the end of the game.”

Barry said his squad needs to play as a team as they have been undefeated for so long, they’ve gotten a lot of self-confidence and felt that they could just go out and win. “Now, we realize we have to play as a team and try to move the runner ahead, hit behind the runners and those little things we need to do to execute what need to be executed.”

Power Outage’s Jeremey “Chicken” Penn, took the loss. K.J. Thompson was Storm’s top hitter, going 2-for-3.

Lady Hawks avenged two losses against Synergy, holding them off 9-7, while handing them their first loss of the season. Lady Hawks’ Javlyn Frett struck out four in the victory and Debbie Ridgeway took the loss. Lady Hawks’ Catcher Annecha Graham finished 2-for-2 with a run batted in as their top hitter while Kim Takeuchi was Synergy’s leading hitter with a 2-for-4 night and 4 RBIs.

“This is super motivation. I like the camaraderie I’ve seen tonight. We had no arguments and that’s the way we’re supposed to play the game—trust one another,” Lady Hawks Coach Bryon “Chucky” Hodge told Island Sun Sports. “I always tell my pitcher don’t try to do too much with the ball, I know my defense could play defense and once they hit the ball, they’ll be able to compete with anybody.”

Synergy’s Coach Neville “Sheep” Smith said his team missed key players because of other engagements, but his team also made some mistakes that led to errors. He said they have to stay in the game and not learn to give up so many errors. “If you don’t have, you can’t give and I think that’s one of the problems tonight,” he said. “We played well for what we had, they were just better than us tonight.”

In other games, Los Macarrecios whipped the Hot Shots, 17-7. They had 17 runs, 6 hist, committed 1 error. Renold “Bushman” Corum was the winning pitcher. The Hot Shots 7 runs came off 5 hits, 1 error and 2 left of base. Andrew Stoutt was tagged with the loss. Alphonso Tejada was the Los Macarrecios’ top hitter with a 2-for-4 game and a run batted in. Willie Morla, Cesar Candelario and Francis Vasquez, all homered. Morla drove in a run, Candelario batted in two and Vasquez had 3 RBIs.

That’s Ya Problem sent 16 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, batted around, scored 12 runs and went on to whip the West End Warriors, 18-6. Shakia Jeffers got the win and Kimesha Adams was saddled with the loss. That’s Ya Problem’s Valissa Brathwaite finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Tyalia Nibbs was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and Ericca Frederick singled and doubled in three at bats and had two runs batted in.
