2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season gets ‘unofficial' early start

2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season gets ‘unofficial' early start

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) which focuses on the Atlantic Hurricane Seasons has issued alerts for hurricane preparations to begin today, May 15, 2021, ahead of the official June 1, 2021 start of the hurricane season.

"Once you’re under pressure, having a written plan will take the guesswork out of what you need to do to protect you and your family," the center tweeted today.

CNN in a report this morning said after a record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season for 2020, storm forecasting will get off to an earlier start this year thanks to consecutive years of pre-season activity with at least one named tropical system formed in the Atlantic prior to June 1, 2021.

As a result, the Hurricane Center has decided that beginning this year, there will issue their routine 'tropical weather outlook' forecasts starting today rather than June 1, 2021.

"We are going to issue the Atlantic Outlook, the actual outlook product where you have the blobs on the website, we're going to start that on May 15th instead of June 1st because we want to make sure we get that information out and start having those areas of concern," says Kenneth Graham, Director of the National Hurricane Center.

17 named storms for 2021

"We're going to do that a little earlier which is a better service," he went on to say.

According to Information, May 15, 2021, is already the official start to eastern Pacific hurricane season, and it is off to a running start this year with Tropical Storm (TS) Andres named after it formed over 600 miles south of Baja California.

For the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Colorado State University, which was the first entity to issue a seasonal tropical forecast issued their forecast back on April 8 indicating 17 total named storms out of a list of names, eight of which are expected to be hurricanes in the region.

In the Virgin Islands (VI), Acting Director at the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) Mr. Jasen Penn said in April that the forecast should serve as a reminder to residents in the Territory to review emergency plans and begin to make preparations early for the season.

VI urged to prepare ahead of June

“While the Atlantic Hurricane Season does not officially begin until June 1, it is important for families and businesses to have basic preparations in place all year long as storms can occur before the season begins,” he said.
