Are Whale Tail Thongs Coming Back?

Yes says Matthew Williams, whose Givenchy debut collection this past week in Paris showed a whole lot of back.

While the talk of the town for many in Paris this fashion week were the three-toed shoes in Matthew Williams' debut fashion collection for Givenchy, the Alyx-founder made even more of a statement with his backsides. Referencing founder Hubert de Givenchy's love of the cutout (see: Audrey Hepburn's infamous LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany's), Williams debuted open-backed gowns that made more than just one statement.

Perched just above the buttocks, a first-ever Givenchy G-string struck a particularly subversive note, and not only for its Tom Ford Gucci-era sex appeal. The whale tale-a trend of the early aughts made famous by Paris Hilton and recently brought back by Hailey Bieber at the 2019 Met Gala-is an overtly feminine style. Clashed between the rest of Williams collection, which easily flows between both sides of the gender closet, the Givenchy G-string a detail of contrasting enchantment. What exactly is Williams trying to say with this song and dance and lock and key? Here's to more hints at finding out.
