Victim speaks out on BBC Radio 5 Live after being misled by fraudulent advert using Martin Lewis's doctored likeness.
Des Healey, a kitchen fitter from Brighton, was scammed out of £76,000 after falling for a fraudulent bitcoin investment advertised on
Facebook.
The advert used a deepfake of financial expert Martin Lewis alongside
Elon Musk, making it seem as though they endorsed the scheme.
This incident underscores the growing concern over deepfake technologies used for scams.
On BBC Radio 5 Live, Martin Lewis expressed his distress upon meeting a victim of a scam that exploited his image.
In August 2023, Des encountered the fake advert and, convinced by the manipulated content, engaged with a supposed financial advisor named 'Carl'.
Des initially invested £1,000 through a Revolut account, eventually pouring in his life savings of £5,000 and taking out loans totaling £70,000.
His trust was further solidified by seemingly successful initial returns, which were later revealed to be deceptive tactics by the scammer.
Aware of the perils of quick financial gains and scams, Martin Lewis advises the public to be cautious of urgent investment opportunities and unsolicited calls.
Des's story also highlights the importance of verifying authenticity before sharing personal information or money.
After reporting the scam, two of the banks Des borrowed from canceled his loans, but he remains in debt for £20,000 plus interest.
He is currently seeking guidance from the financial ombudsman.
Following his ordeal, Des shared his story publicly in hopes of warning others.
Martin Lewis praised his courage, emphasizing that falling victim to scams does not define one as foolish, but rather a victim of calculated schemes.
