BVI Athletic Association plans to field big team for 2020 CARIFTA Games

BVI Athletic Association plans to field big team for 2020 CARIFTA Games

The BVI Athletic Association (BVIAA) is aiming to field a large squad to the 2020 Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games in Bermuda, as one of the association’s many goals for next year.
This was revealed by President Steve Augustine during the association’s General Assembly meeting held on Monday, November 25.

“CARIFTA 2020 is fast approaching and one of the things I’ll like to look at this year is sending a pretty large team to the CARIFTA Games for 2020,” Augustine stated.

He said the reason behind the BVIAA’s ambition is that Augustine believes it will help in the development process of some of the BVI’s promising athletes.

“The CARIFTA Games is a developing meet, it is not an elite meet, so we are also going to look at athletes who are on the bubble (verge of qualifying) and based on merit we’ll look at giving them a fair opportunity to compete at the CARIFTA Games. The CARIFTA Games do not set qualifying standards, the countries do,” Augustine reasoned.

Some of the other events listed for 2020 include The World Indoors Championships in Nanjing, China, in March; the World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya in July; the OESC Senior Athletic Championships -which the BVI hopes to host -and the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan which will run from July to August.
