BVI needs proper water, sewerage infrastructure to develop tourism

BVI needs proper water, sewerage infrastructure to develop tourism

Fourth District Representative Mark Vanterpool said new and improved infrastructure is needed to grow tourism in the Virgin Islands.
Vanterpool was referring to the territory having a good supply of water and proper control of its sewerage network so visitors can enjoy the BVI without the associated problems.

“If Water & Sewerage fall short of that infrastructure, you’re going to have the problems in Virgin Gorda as they did for Christmas in July. I overheard the current Junior Minister for Trade and Development harassing the minister for water. Minister, we had a lot of people coming to Virgin Gorda for Christmas in July and the water was a problem,” said Vanterpool, who was at the time giving his contribution to the House of Assembly’s debate on a bill seeking to establish the Water and Sewerage Department as a statutory body,

“And indeed, it will be a problem when I see all those people in Virgin Gorda. All those people and you have a water shortage. That is not good news. So, this infrastructure is needed to make sure that going forward we can grow tourism and grow tourism with a good supply of water and good control of sewerage,” the Fourth District Representative stated.

He continued: “I don’t even want to talk about all of those who live here who don’t want to go on the road and smell the sewerage if we pass Road Town and all over the place; and the fact that we have a sewerage plant that we developed down in Burt Point and the sewerage plant is sitting there doing nothing after hurricane and Water & Sewerage, as a department, can’t get it up and running.”

He elaborated that the seriousness of what he was discussing is that the government wants to develop a tourism product but cannot develop infrastructure that is going to serve the needs of the territory.
