BVIOC launching community sports clinic this weekend, local pro athletes take part

Top local athletes are expected to be part of a free community sports clinic that is being hosted by the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) and conducted by the United States-based Tru Fit Athletics Club on Saturday, October 12.

A media release from the BVIOC confirmed that Chantel Malone, Kyron McMaster, Eldred Henry and Ashley Kelly will all be home to participate in the clinic.

President of the BVIOC Ephraim Penn commended the initiative and said that through sports, these athletes continue to showcase the BVI on the world stage with their outstanding performances.

“This is a unique event which will bring our elite athletes back home for one weekend to celebrate the latest historic achievement by Chantel Malone at the Lima 2019 Pan Am Games by sharing their experiences with the community, giving us an insight into their lives as professional athletes, provide tips and pointers for aspiring athletes and serve as an inspiration to us all,” Penn stated.

He further said: “We are excited to have Mrs Tahesia Harrigan-Scott the territory’s recently-retired, first senior professional female athlete and Chef de Mission of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games join us with coach Joey Scott of Tru Fit Athletics, Miami in organizing a free clinic for the community.”

Educational and Practical Sessions Included

The clinic, in the meantime, will be divided into two sections — educational and practical.

The educational section will be conducted in the Multi-purpose Sports Complex and will be an open-session discussion between the professional athletes and attendees.

It will be focusing on the trials and tribulation experienced in sports and provide insights on how an aspiring athlete can go about achieving their goals.

The practical section will involve attendees being divided into various age groups and participating in sprints, long jumps, throws and hurdles, which will be directed by the respective professional athlete. These activities will be taking place at the A.O Shirley Recreation Ground.

Anti-Doping Sessions

Also being included in the clinic will be an anti-doping breakout session which will be conducted by Dr Harlan Vanterpool. This is to equip all persons involved in an athlete’s life with practical and useful information to help them differentiate between banned substances by the World Anti-Doping Association and safe medication whether prescription or over the counter.

The clinic is set to begin from 9 am and run until 1 pm.
