CIBC First Caribbean raises $51,500 for BVI Cancer Society

CIBC First Caribbean raises $51,500 for BVI Cancer Society

The BVI Cancer Society is kick-starting 2023 with a large cheque from CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank, positioning the Society to continue providing much-needed support to persons living with and or affected by cancer.

On Thursday, January 19, 2023, the lobby of CIBC FirstCaribbean was filled with representatives of corporate entities that chipped in financially and otherwise for the 2022 edition of the bank's Walk for a Cure.

It was the occasion of a simple presentation ceremony.

Country Manager of CIBC First Caribbean International Bank Mr Fabian S. Devonish, right, presents the cheque to President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria A. Fahie.

History of walk for a Cure

Those present heard that the bank's first-ever fundraising walk took place in 2012 with 90 staff and family members joining in as part of the bank’s 10th-anniversary celebrations. $1,250.00 was raised.

Each year, and for the next 4 years, it was expanded to include more participants by way of sponsors and the wider community. The funds raised doubled each year.

Country Manager of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Mr Fabian S. Devonish said, "In 2019 we partnered with the BVI Cancer Society to combine resources and efforts. The collaboration raised $39,200, with $29,200 donated to the BVI Cancer Society and $10,000 to the oncology department of the BVI Health Services Authority.

"We were on a roll and even the Covid-19 pandemic couldn't stop us in 2020 as we still managed to raise $9,000 despite the mass gathering restrictions."

Devonish said the bank picked up the pace in 2021 and created a calendar of activities that would engage the community earlier in the year. "Even though we were somewhat hampered by Covid restrictions, our efforts paid off as we raised $35,000 and handed over the largest, single cheque presented to the Cancer Society to date."
More than 300 walkers registered for the 2022 CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for the Cure which took place on Tortola on Saturday, October 8, 2022.

Rising to the challenge!

He shared the bank rose to the challenge put to them by the President of the BVI Cancer Society, Ms Gloria A. Fahie, to raise $50,000 in the 2022 walk for a Cure.

"I guess we all took the motto and challenge on board and, thanks to the support of each and every one of you, I am delighted to officially tell the BVI Cancer Society that we surpassed the goal and can proudly present you with a cheque for $51,500 to assist you with your invaluable work with the people who rely on your volunteered time, your expertise and your support at every stage."

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the BVI Cancer Society, President Fahie said the BVI Cancer Society is thankful and grateful to CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank and expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the fundraising efforts.

She added, "The year 2023 might be new, but the work that has brought us together today is not. What we are witnessing today is the culmination of months of hard work and charitable commitment from Mr Fabian Devonish and his amazing team.

"This check today of $51,500.00 is an embodiment of the term good corporate citizenship, and for this, I would like to thank once again the entire staff of CIBC First Caribbean International Banks both here and abroad and to the many contributors who donated so generously to this worthy cause," Ms Fahie stated.
