Convicted post-hurricane looter gets 26 months imprisonment for stealing TV, and.... additional 6 month if he is poor!

Justice Ann-Marie Smith was also ordered the looter to repay Infinite Solutions $286.76 - the value of the television. And that makes sense. But he was ordered to pay that sum by January 31, 2020, while he is in jail, or serve an additional six months in prison (!). Why somebody who do not have money must serve additional 6 month in jail? how much money it will cost the public to held a person in prison for additional 6 months? Since when being a poor is a crime? While it is absolutely right to punish a post-hurricane looter, i think it is totally wrong, immoral and against the public interest to send somebody to additional 6 months in jail just because he is not as rich as the looters of public money who will never face justice as they are well connected with the justice system.

Belle Vue resident Shamoii Dagou, who reportedly looted a flat-screen television because he saw others looting, was sentenced to 26 months at Her Majesty’s Prison on Wednesday.

The former government employee attached to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) was also ordered to repay Infinite Solutions $286.76 — the value of the television.

 He was ordered to pay that sum by January 31, 2020, while he is in prison, or... serve an additional six months in prison. 6 months for not having $260!

In handing down her sentence, Justice Ann-Marie Smith said the timing of the offense — which occurred following a natural disaster – aggravated the crime.

“This defendant must go to prison … a custodial sentence is warranted,” Justice Smith said. "must" she said. She believe that 2 years prison and not better education system is the only way to fix the problem. lucky i am not her son...
