COVID-19 outbreak: 273 active cases now recorded in VI

The number of COVID-19 active cases in the Virgin Islands (VI) continues to skyrocket, with the latest update today, July 4, 2021, indicating that territory is now seeing a record 273 positive cases.

The new cases, 118, comes as the BVI Health Services Authority has returned the COVID-19 testing figures as of July 3, 2021.

As of yesterday, the number of recorded active cases numbered 155.

According to Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald E. Georges, in an update on July 4, 2021, a total of 752 tests were run on July 2, 2021, with a further 118 samples testing positive for COVID-19.

Of the 273 active COVID-19 cases in the Virgin Islands, 12 are quarantined on vessels and related to entry screening, 256 are on Tortola, four (4) on Virgin Gorda and one (1) on Jost van Dyke.

“This brings our total active COVID-19 case count to 273,” Dr Georges informed.

He said of these 273 cases, 12 are quarantined on vessels and related to entry screening, 256 are on Tortola, four (4) on Virgin Gorda and one (1) on Jost van Dyke.

Travel screening, according to Dr Georges, accounts for 45 cases, while 206 cases are from contact tracing, with some persons presenting themselves or being screened due to attending the emergency room.

“With respect to the vaccination status of the 273 active cases, 55 percent are unvaccinated, 13 percent partially vaccinated, 17 percent vaccinated, and 15 percent not recorded or to be determined,” Dr Georges stated.
