Duo allegedly found with gun gets bail

Duo allegedly found with gun gets bail

A man and a woman found with an illegal firearm and ammunition in Road Town on November 3 were granted bail when they appeared in the Magistrate Court today.
Lynette Summersill, a 56-year-old Guyanese cook, pleaded not guilty to the two charges laid against her, while her co-accused David Cummings, a 44-year-old construction worker and Jamaican, did not enter a plea as his attorney was not present for the hearing.

The two co-defendants were granted bail in the sum of $50,000 with several conditions. The two accused were instructed by Magistrate Khadeen Palmer to surrender all travel documents to the police and report to the Road Town Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 6am and 12pm.

The court was told that on November 3, 2021, two police officers were conducting a routine mobile patrol along Admin Drive when they noticed a Black Chevrolet jeep driving slowly during the blackout at approximately 1:30am. The driver of the vehicle, Cummings, was instructed to pull over but he failed to comply initially. However, the driver eventually complied and the officers asked the two occupants for a search.

The court heard when the officers were about to search the car, Cummings tried to flee the scene. However, he was caught and handcuffed. Eight rounds of live nine-millimetre ammunition were discovered along with a black and silver nine-millimetre gun under the front passenger seat of the vehicle.

This incident is just one of the latest discoveries of illegal firearms and ammunition in the territory. Yesterday, a police sergeant was granted bail when he appeared in court for illegal possession of 11 rounds of live ammunition.

Cummings was represented by Richard Rowe who was absent from the hearing while Summersill was represented by Stephen Daniels. The matter is adjourned until January 24, 2022, for reporting and the court will accept a plea from Cummings in the presence of his attorney.
