Eluned Morgan Faces Rising Challenges Ahead of 2026 Welsh Elections
Wales' first female Labour First Minister addresses growing political competition and ongoing public concerns in a campaign-style visit to Blackwood.
Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales and the first female head of government for the UK Labour Party, is already on the campaign trail, despite the 2026 Senedd elections being over a year away.
During a visit to Blackwood in the South Wales Valleys, Morgan spoke to dozens of residents, listening to their concerns and discussing how her government could address pressing issues.
Morgan acknowledged the challenge Labour faces in the upcoming elections, with growing competition from both Reform UK on the right and Plaid Cymru on the left.
Polling suggests that Labour may struggle to win a majority, and the party might need to form a coalition with Plaid Cymru.
Morgan is particularly concerned about Reform UK’s rise, which she sees as a threat to community values and cohesion.
She also criticized Plaid Cymru's refusal to support Labour’s proposed budget, warning it could lead to a loss of funding that would benefit Wales, particularly in areas like healthcare.
During her visit, Morgan met with residents and business owners, addressing issues ranging from healthcare access to the closure of Cardiff University’s nursing school.
She focused on four key areas: healthcare, connectivity, economic opportunity, and community development.
Despite the warm reception she received, Morgan faced skepticism from some, including local business owners like Nicholas Davies, who expressed frustration over Blackwood’s decline and announced his support for Reform UK. As Wales’ first female First Minister, Morgan remains committed to advancing Labour’s agenda in Wales while grappling with the evolving political landscape and the growing challenges posed by Reform UK and Plaid Cymru.
