Eryri National Park Upholds Use of Welsh Name 'Yr Wyddfa' for Snowdon
Successful adoption of Welsh names strengthens local cultural identity
Eryri National Park Authority will continue to exclusively use the Welsh names 'Yr Wyddfa' for Snowdon and 'Eryri' for Snowdonia, following a successful transition since November 2022.
The decision, which follows strong local and visitor support, aims to promote Welsh heritage and language.
Though some concerns have surfaced regarding pronunciation and awareness of these names, many businesses and media have adopted them, enhancing the cultural consistency and visibility of the park's Welsh identity.
Despite these challenges, which include visitors mistakenly thinking the Welsh names are new, Eryri National Park views the change as a unique selling point that differentiates it from other UK parks.
The authority plans to introduce pronunciation guides and update its logo to reflect these changes.
