Fire Breaks Out at Europe's Largest Nuclear Power Plant
A fire broke out at Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia, in Ukraine, and Moscow and Kyiv are blaming each other. The IAEA reported seeing smoke but noted no radiation increase. Both sides confirmed damage to a cooling tower, but no immediate nuclear safety concerns have been reported.
Moscow and Kyiv have accused each other of starting a fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the largest in Europe.
The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported seeing significant smoke after multiple explosions but noted no increase in radiation levels.
The fire, which began around 8 p.m. on Sunday, was extinguished by midnight.
Ukraine's Energoatom and Russia's Rosatom confirmed damage to a non-functioning cooling tower.
The Zaporizhzhia plant has been under Russian control since early 2022, following the invasion labeled a 'special operation' by Moscow.
No immediate nuclear safety concerns have been reported, but both nations continue to blame each other for ongoing risks.
