First-ever EMT training hosted in the BVI

First-ever EMT training hosted in the BVI

For the first time in the history of the British Virgin Islands, aspiring Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) have received introductory training locally, which will enhance their capacity to become regionally certified EMTs.

This is according to a recent media release from the H Lavity Stoutt Community College which confirmed that 12 persons were a part of the first cohort of training

The training sessions are a joint venture between the college’s Workforce Training Division, the BVI Health Services Authority and the Centre for Professional Development and Community Education.

The newly-trained EMTs have been introduced in emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients.

“The programme will cover areas such as Anatomy and Physiology, Lifting and Handling, Examination and Assessment, Airway Management and Resuscitation, Trauma, Medical Conditions, Administrative Operations, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and more,” HLSSC stated.

It added: “This immersive training will be complemented with a comprehensive curriculum that will utilise a blended approach that consists of both online and practical applications and assessments over a course of eleven months.”

Regional Certification

HLSCC further noted that students who complete their full requirements will be certified through the Caribbean Association of Fire Chiefs.

“Instructors, Dr Domnick Frazer and Mr Rodney Brathwaite stated that they are excited with the introduction of the EMT course as it carves the path for the continued development of the Emergency Medical Services offered to the residents and visitors of the Virgin Islands,” the aforesaid release stated.
