Foundation cancels RBG award ceremony that would have honored Musk, Murdoch after family’s outcry
The Opperman Foundation has withdrawn its plans for an award event meant to commend Elon Musk, Rupert Murdoch, and others with a tribute named after the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
This decision came after objections from Ginsburg's relatives, particularly over the inclusion of Musk and Murdoch, which prompted her son to label it as "desecration" of his mother's memory.
Julie Opperman, the foundation's chair, expressed regret for any upset caused to Ginsburg's family and friends. She emphasized the aim was to celebrate Ginsburg's influential legacy, but in light of the family’s concerns, the April 2024 ceremony is now canceled.
The award originally focused on female leadership but had expanded to include male recipients and leaders from varied sectors to reflect Ginsburg's advocacy for equality.
However, in light of Ginsburg's son’s remarks and her legacy as a Supreme Court Justice famous for her progressive stances and promotion of equality, the foundation has chosen to avoid controversy and honor her memory without the ceremony.
