Free electric shuttle service available in RT from Monday Feb 7, 2022

Starting Monday, February 7, 2022, persons in the capital city, Road Town, will have the option to park their vehicles and hop on an electric shuttle around the city for free, as Government seeks to improve the traffic situation in the territory while reducing the territory’s carbon footprint.

The service will be done using 6 newly acquired electric transit shuttles, which were commissioned on February 3, 2022, at Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park.

The electric transportation, which cost Government $178,000, includes 2 enclosed shuttles, equipped with doors and AC for days of inclement weather, and 4 open hop-on and hop-off vehicles.

Each shuttle has a 15-passenger capacity and a speed limit is 25 miles per hour with 50 driving miles once fully charged.

Hours of operation

The free shuttle ride around town will be available between the hours of 7:00am and 6:00pm starting from Ralph T. O'Neal Administration Complex.

According to Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), the Park and Ride Service is just one component of a comprehensive initiative to improve the city.

He said for several years Road Town has been plagued with traffic and parking woes and this continues to be an increasing problem due to the city’s increasing population and physical development.

Objectives of Park & Ride Service

According to the Transportation Minister, the objectives of the Park and Ride Service is to alleviate parking lot congestions, reduce traffic congestion, reduce the use of fossil fuel and the effect of harmful emission into the environment, which in turn reduces the carbon footprints in the VI, reducing parking on roadways, and making the city more pedestrian-friendly.

“To further compliment the park and ride shuttle service free parking will remain available at the hospital grounds and the Festival Grounds. Eventually, motorists will have an option of paid parking at convenient parking lots in the city and this would provide the subsidy to maintain and sustain the shuttle service,” Hon Rymer said.
