Gov’t to send barge, desalination plant to SVG

As potable water remains one of the most critical resources needed by the people of St Vincent, BVI government is currently coordinating efforts to dispatch a mobile water desalination plant to that country that is currently enduring a volcanic eruption.
Desalination plants are used to convert seawater to drinking water in many dry regions of the world. They are also used to treat water that is fouled by other natural and unnatural contaminants.

Along with the desalination plant, Premier Andrew Fahie said the BVI will be sending a barge with supplies. The relief items are currently being collected across the territory.

Premier Fahie said the barge is scheduled to depart Port Purcell on Wednesday, April 21 for Virgin Gorda, where additional supplies will be collected.
Thereafter, the vessel will set sail on the 24th for arrival in St Vincent and the Grenadines on the 26th of April.

In addition to these supplies, the Ministry of Transportation & Works and the Water & Sewerage Department will be coordinating the dispatch of water trucks filled with water, and water tanks filled with water. These items will also be placed on a barge scheduled to leave the territory next week.

“We are also looking into exploring the possibility of sending water in the holding tank of the barge which will be transporting the supplies. We are coordinating efforts with the Ports Authority at Port Purcell and the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) to ensure that the vessel can be packed and dispatched by next week,” Premier Fahie told the House of Assembly on April 15.

The Family of Rotary Clubs, the BVI Red Cross, St Vincent and the Grenadines Association, the Lions Club, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), the Office of the Honorary Consul of St Vincent and the Grenadines, various local church organisations, and the DDM are all collaborating to provide humanitarian relief and support to the volcano-affected country.

The Rotary Family of Clubs in the BVI will also hold a telethon where the goal is to raise $50,000 in support of the relief effort beginning April 15 at 7 p.m.
