Hon Vanterpool gives 'bon voyage' speech in HoA

In what he described as his bon voyage speech in the House of Assembly on March 2, 2023, Fourth District Representative Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool expressed gratitude to those who worked and supported him over his 25 years in politics.

“I’m making this my bon voyage speech, Madam Speaker, as this is my last time, in the next few weeks I should [no longer be] be representing my people. It is not saying I would not represent them anymore in different ways, but certainly not in this platform. Some people say it is yet to be seen because Nomination Day is not here yet, but we should always leave those things open.

“But I want to tell my people of the Fourth District, thank you for your support always and the people of the Virgin Islands who supported me over the years…” Hon Vanterpool said at the Continuation of the Third Sitting of the Fifth Session of the Fourth HoA in Road Town.

The long-serving legislator said while it was a pleasure, it was not always fun representing the people and doing the work but he loved the challenge.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) has earned the right to retire from political life, as he noted that he has been a prominent voice in moving the Virgin Islands forward.

Hon Vanterpool has 'earned the right to retire' Premier

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), in teasing that Nomination Day is not here yet, said Honourable Vanterpool has earned the right to retire from political life, as he noted that he has been a prominent voice in moving the Virgin Islands forward.

Dr Wheatley said Hon Vanterpool has also demonstrated acts of self-service to the people of the VI, noting that the positive impact he has had in so many people’s lives is inspiring and motivating.

“In the history of the Virgin Islands, his name will find a prominent place in this particular chapter…Certainly, Honourable Vanterpool, you were a powerful member and a powerful voice in this House of Assembly…

“I also admire, as a young person who wants to see the Virgin Islands take the next step- to go down the path of self-determination, [you being] one of the strongest voices in this House as it pertains to us moving in that direction," Dr Wheatley noted.

The Premier said he will continue to seek advice and counsel from Honourable Vanterpool, whom he noted has also demonstrated excellence as a prominent businessman.

The Speaker of the House, Hon Corine N. George-Massicote, also wished Hon Vanterpool well, as she noted this was despite her questioning the relevance of some of his statements and debates.

“I do believe you’ve been patient with me and I’m grateful for your support,” she said.
