El huracán Iota tocará tierra la noche de este lunes en Nicaragua

Hurricane Iota will make landfall this Monday night in Nicaragua

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Hurricane Iota will make landfall in Nicaragua on the night of this Monday, November 16.

Iota, which will make landfall as a category five hurricane, will affect the same region that was devastated last week by Cyclone Eta.

At least, in Panama, Hurricane Eta left 19 dead, 12 missing and damaged the agricultural sector, especially in the province of Chiriquí.

Due to the proximity of Iota in the area, strong gusts of wind should be felt.

The NHC recalled that this is a situation that puts the lives of dozens of people at risk, therefore, it recommended to follow the instructions of the civil protection authorities.

Due to the incidence of the aforementioned cyclone, the Colombian island of Providencia is isolated.

In addition, most of the Colombian territory suffers the effects of a heavy rainy season, which left at least 4 dead, 16 missing and thousands of victims.

The Central American presidents on Monday cried out to the financial community and international organizations for resources to promote the reconstruction of their respective countries, given the damage caused by hurricanes Eta and Iota caused by climate change, as well as the effects of Covid-19.

The presidents of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, and Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, met this Monday in Tegucigalpa, and in virtual communication with Daniel Ortega (Nicaragua) and Carlos Alvarado (Costa Rica), they agreed to form a common block to manage the aid, the Honduran government reported in a statement.

Dante Mossi, president of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), was at the meeting.

We have funds for emergency aid and we can coordinate with other donors and CABEI friendly countries (to) access green funds from the United Nations - resources intended to mitigate the effects of climate change - Mossi announced.
