India Unveils 7 Pillars of Cooperation with CARICOM
Prime Minister Modi Presents Strategic Initiatives at India-CARICOM Summit
During the India-CARICOM Summit held in Georgetown, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, co-chair of the summit, introduced a seven-pillar strategic program acronymically designated as C-A-R-I-C-O-M.
These pillars aim to enhance collaboration and transfer of resources from India to the Caribbean, advancing the goals set in the prior summit five years ago.
The leaders of CARICOM acknowledged India's significant role in the Global South and its generous contributions.
1. Capacity Building ('C') : India pledged 1,000 IT scholarships, proposed a regional technology center expansion in Belize, and suggested initiatives like a forensic center and civil service online training.
2. Agriculture and Food Security ('A') : Modi highlighted India's technological advancements in agriculture, such as drone deployment and millet propagation for nutrition benefits.
3. Renewable Energy and Climate Change ('R') : CARICOM countries were invited to partake in global initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance promoted by India.
4. Innovation and Technology ('I') : India showcased its technological infrastructure 'Stack' and digital payment system UPI and proposed adopting these for economic benefits in CARICOM nations.
5. Cricket and Culture ('C') : Recognizing cricket as a means for women's empowerment, Modi offered 11 cricket coaching scholarships to each CARICOM nation and suggested organizing cultural exchanges and film festivals.
6. Ocean Economy and Maritime Security ('O') : Viewing small Caribbean states as ocean countries, Modi proposed collaboration in ocean resource development, maritime connectivity, and regional security through shared strategies against piracy and trafficking.
7. Medicines and Healthcare ('M') : India emphasized its healthcare achievements and suggested establishing Janaushadi scheme-like centers in CARICOM countries.
It also proposed telehealth initiatives and the adoption of Indian Pharmacopeia for cost-effective solutions.
The summit underscored India's commitment to strengthening its ties with the Caribbean community through comprehensive and sustainable development cooperation.
