Jost Van Dyke debuts in Youth Football League

Jost Van Dyke’s Old Madrid squad debuted in the BVI Football Association’s Youth and Jr. League in Greenland on Saturday against the Virgin Gorda Sugar Boys and they picked up their first goal in the process.

“This team is basically comprised of 9-14 year old and we’re taking part in the U13 and U17 Divisions,” Coach Darren Jones told Island Sun Sports. “We’re very proud to be part of this tournament for the very first time and first time being off island. The kids were a bit nervous, but we represented 100%. We also had our first goal by Mario (LaTouche) and I’m pretty sure we’re gonna be back.”

Jones described it as being “phenomenal” being able to play in the BVIFA tournament.

“This is a life changing moment for us,” he noted. “I saw some really good plays from the guys and a lot of room for improvement as well.”

Hugo Hlavacek scored his first goal in the first minute of the game as the Wolues FC went on to beat Old Madrid, 9-1. Hlavacek alse scored in the second minute before going on to complete his hattrick in the 16th minute. Further goals came from Quinn Woodfield (2), William Sanders, Ethan Mohamed and Charlie Potgeiter. LaTouche scored a consolation for Old Madrid.

Also, in U13 action, One Caribbean beat the Sugar Boys, 2-0 with Devonte Smith scoring twice.

Meanwhile in the U17 Division, Old Madrid came up against a firing on all cylinders One Love outfit, who duly romped to a 5-0 victory as Jalen Prentice scored a hat trick, including one dazzling virtuoso effort that saw him dribble past four opposition players before firing home. Shajahni Duporte and Felix Walters also found the net to round out the scoring.

Adrian Padilla scored direct from a corner kick, to lead One Caribbean to a 1-0 win over the Rebels.

Women’s Futsal League

The Wolues kicked off the second round of action by improving to 4-0, following a 2-0 victory over Virgin Gorda United. Gabi Jermyn, Tola Broderick and Darci Reich each had opportunities to put the Wolues up in the first 10 minutes, but the shots were either saved or went wide. However, Broderick finally broke the deadlock, latching on to a pass from Reich and making the net ripple for a 1 nil lead.

With the game 1 nil, Coach Peter Van Zoost would make some strategic changes by bringing on both Zolita Bamford and Jhaniqua Collymore, who despite bringing some fresh energy to the team were unable to add to the score line and the first half ended 1-0.

Within seconds of the restart Tinia Van Zoost pulled off a smart save, diving low to her right to keep the Wolues ahead and seemingly gaining more confidence or shocked into a reaction, the Wolues started to turn on the style. Reich’s curling attempt heading towards the upper right corner of the goal could only be blocked by a defender’s hand and Reich then stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to make it 2-0.

Men’s League

League champs Islanders won their 15th game of the season, with a 2-1 victory over the third place Sugar Boys, 11-2-6. The Islanders, 15-2-2, had given themselves a 2-goal cushion after Knru Charles opened the score in the 33rd minute and Anfernee Johnson had doubled the advantage in the 64th. The Sugar Boys got a 74th minute strike from Akeem Hendrickson.

Noel Maxwell had the only goal as the second placed Wolues, 13-3-3, blanked the 6-7-6 sixth placed Lion Heart, 1-0.

The Panthers had one of their highest ever league finish, ending in fourth place, level on points with One Caribbean, as both compiled 9-2-8 records, but with a better goal difference even though One Caribbean concluded their season with an 8-1 thumping of Old Madrid. Jean Charles and Kelvin Glasgow both scored hat tricks while Martino Rosser and Romano Peters were also on the scoresheet.

Defending Champions, One Love, 6-3-10, finished 7th, VG United were 8th at 5-5-9. The 6-1-12 Rebels finished ninth 9th while the 5-3-13 Old Madrid were 10th and winless FC Sea Argo, ended the season at 0-0-10.
