JVD suffers as contractor hijacks Water & Sewerage employees

Second District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull has blasted a private company that the Department of Water & Sewerage has contracted to provide potable water to the residents of Jost Van Dyke.
Speaking in the House of Assembly on December 14, Turnbull said there is an inconsistent supply of water on Jost Van Dyke where people sometimes go months without having the vital commodity.

Coupled with that, he said the two employees at the Department of Water & Sewerage stationed on the sister island to assist the people are often hijacked to do repairs for the private company which should has its own staff.

“The two employees of the Water & Sewerage Department on Jost Van Dyke find themselves in the contractor’s building doing repair works for them - at our expense! I brought it to the attention of the [Water & Sewerage] Minister, I brought it to the attention of the Director and I’m saying it publicly, it needs to stop. You (the contractor) have a job to do. When your parts break down, have your people come over there to fix them,” Turnbull expressed.

He continued: “But because the two employees have so much concern for the people of Jost Van Dyke, they do what they have to do.”

In the end, Turnbull called for the government to improve the water availability on Jost Van Dyke — a community which often feels like the “forgotten island” of the BVI.
