King Charles and Queen Camilla Confirm State Visit to Vatican Amid Pope's Recovery

The royal couple's April visit to the Vatican will coincide with Pope Francis's ongoing health recovery and a celebration of the papal jubilee.
The upcoming state visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the Vatican is confirmed for early April, despite Pope Francis's ongoing treatment for double pneumonia.

The visit is scheduled to take place from April 7 to 10, coinciding with the jubilee celebrations of the Catholic Church and highlighting the connection between the Catholic Church and the Church of England.

A source from Buckingham Palace expressed hopes for the Pope’s health to improve sufficiently for the visit to proceed.

Recent updates indicate that the Pope, aged 88, is no longer in a critical condition, although his health remains complex due to his advanced age and previous lung surgery.

During the planned visit, King Charles will make history as the first British monarch to visit the Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls—marking a significant milestone since the Reformation.

Additionally, he is set to address both houses of Italy's parliament, engage with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and partake in a black-tie state banquet hosted by the president at the Palazzo Quirinale.

This state visit follows a period of concern regarding Pope Francis’s health, as he was admitted to hospital on February 14 for severe bronchitis that later progressed to pneumonia.

His recovery has been closely monitored, and the Vatican recently released a photograph of the Pope, his first since his hospitalization.

On April 8, contingent upon the Pope's health, King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to meet with Pope Francis to commemorate the 2025 jubilee, which is traditionally observed every 25 years.

The theme for the jubilee this year is 'Pilgrims of Hope', emphasizing reconciliation and prayer within the Catholic faith.

The couple's itinerary also includes attending a service in the Sistine Chapel that focuses on the theme of 'care for creation', aligning with both the Pope's and King Charles's long-standing dedication to environmental issues.

Additional highlights of the trip include a joint aerial display over Rome by Italy's Frecce Tricolori and the RAF's Red Arrows, emphasizing the UK's collaboration with Italy in defense matters.

In Ravenna, the royal couple will honor the 80th anniversary of the province’s liberation from Nazi occupation, commemorating the events of April 10, 1945, in conjunction with a town hall reception.

Queen Camilla will also separately visit the Byron museum, in recognition of literary culture celebrated in the region.
