McMaster Cruises Into Semis At Tokoyo Olympics

Local star athlete Mr. Kyron McMaster won the qualifying heat in 48.79 seconds, which made him automatically move to the semi-finals in the Men’s 400-meter hurdles in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
McMaster will now compete in the semi-final, which will be held on Sunday, August 1, at 8.25 am eastern time.

McMaster was stationed in the second lane and outperformed six other competitors from around the world.

“Good start from McMaster. Occasionally he can get it wrong on the big stage. Got his qualifying in the world championships in 2017, although he did get that Commonwealth title three years ago. Good run,” one of the male commentators stated.

McMaster has been making the BVI proud on the world stage.

According to the BVI Olympic Committee’s website, McMaster “became the BVI’s first individual medalist at a global event outdoors event when he placed third at the 2016 World U20 Championships.”

It continued: “Kyron is the sole 400m hurdler to make his mark as a sub-48-second runner in 2017. He achieved this most outstanding individual athletic performance when he clocked 47.80 seconds at the Jamaica International Invitational.

The achievement is rare, with no runner in the world achieving the feat in 2014, three in 2013, one in 2015, and four in 2016. Of those athletes, five have run faster than Kyron. The result ranked him as the world’s fastest for the 400m Hurdles in 2017 and placed him #2 on the 2017 IAAF World Rankings and #151 on the World All-Time list. He also ranks as the second-fastest 20-year old ever, behind Trinidad-born, American Kerron Clement (47.24).”

The BVI Olympic Committee, the 24-year-old went from a disqualification for a line violation at the 2017 IAAF World Championships to win his event at the IAAF Diamond League in Zurich with a time of 48.07.

He is presently training with Coach Lennox Graham at Clemson University, South Carolina, USA.

Elinah Phillip placed second in the 50 meters freestyle head this morning. Long jumper Chantel Malone, who will go through the qualifying round on Sunday, August 1.
