Over $2.3M in contracts awarded to two local firms for rehab works

The Recovery & Development Agency (RDA) has awarded more than $2.3 million to two local construction companies to conduct rehabilitation works on three projects across the territory.

This was revealed at a recent contract-signing ceremony where Caribbean Environmental Restoration Limited received two contracts and Metro Construction Limited got one.

Metro’s contract is valued at $1,410,670.79 and requires the company to execute repairs to the Vanterpool Administration Building on Virgin Gorda.

Speaking at the ceremony, Premier Andrew Fahie said he is looking forward to the completion of the project which will allow for public officers to work and provide residents with a safe place to conduct business.

“The project calls for the rehabilitation of the three-story administration building. I look forward to seeing the rehabilitation works moving forward swiftly where the contractor will ensure the redesign and new office location for the DMV office, improve security elements in the main lobby, improvements to the inland revenue office, refurbishment of the Immigration Department and the Labour Department office space,” Premier Fahie stated.

The premier also said further works will include the reconfiguring of the Passport Office space, repairs to damage to the interior and exterior walls, ceilings, and installation of hurricane shutters and refurbish restrooms.

More than $800,000 to CERL

The two contracts awarded to Caribbean Environmental Restoration Limited were for the rehabilitation works to Little Dix Hill slope at a value of $407,105.60, and for the road rehabilitation works of the Bob’s Gas Station slope at $494,308.10.

According to Transportation & Works Minister, Kye Rymer, the work at Little Dix Hill will include the demolition of the existing asphalt and concrete pavement, construction of 154-foot long by nine-foot-high concrete reinforced wall, and the construction of a new concrete reinforced retaining wall of 33 feet in length and 15 feet in height.

It also includes the construction of a new concrete reinforced retaining wall that is 62 feet in length and seven feet in height, construction of a 43-foot long by eight-feet-high concrete reinforced retaining wall, construction of 592-foot reinforced curve with slipper drains, installation of 344-foot guard rails, and construction of a six-inch thick concrete road pavement that is 131 linear feet in length.

Bob Gas Station slope works

Rymer also outlined some of the works which are expected to be executed to the slope at Bob’s Gas Station.

These works will include the demolition of the existing asphalt and concrete pavement, construction of a 101-foot-long by eight-foot-high concrete reinforced wall, and construction of 623 feet of new box drains and metal grills.

Works will also include the construction of 230 feet of swale drains, the construction of 197 feet of reinforced curve wall, installation of 180 feet of guard rails, and construction of 115 linear feet of six-inch-thick concrete road pavement.

Promise to address road problems

Minister Rymer said his ministry will be doing all within its power to ensure the road infrastructure in the BVI becomes completely safe and comfortable for residents to traverse daily on.

“On a near-daily basis, I receive concerns from residents and motorists on some of the challenges they experience on the roadways, and I pledge to do all I can within the available funding to urgently and swiftly address these problems,” Rymer added.
