Progressive United 2023 Elections slate still a work in progress – Hon Fraser

Progressive United 2023 Elections slate still a work in progress – Hon Fraser

Progressive United (PU), the four-year-old political movement founded by senior legislator Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) is still working to finalise both its At-Large and District candidates for the 2023 elections. This is according to its Chairman Hon Fraser.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), Hon Fraser said while the names are a work in progress, he won’t divulge any of his candidates just yet; however, he said he expects an election date to come after the House of Assembly dissolves.

“It is not customary to announce elections date so prematurely… what happens first of all the House has to dissolved, not has to but usually this is what happens…and during the time between dissolution and the mandated election deadline, the Premier would announce a date for elections.

"Constitutionally, the House has to dissolve on or before March 12, so I don’t expect it to dissolve before March 12, if it’s the day before that’s the earlier I expect it to dissolve and the elections are constitutionally due by May 12, 2023.”

Progressives United (PU), a political group was officially launched by Hon Fraser on January 11, 2019, in Sea Cows Bay on the main Island of Tortola.

Gov'ts last term will run 'down to the wire' - Hon Fraser

Hon Fraser said sometime between March 12, 2023, which is the possible dissolution date, and May 12, he expects a date for the election.

“So I am not surprised that you haven’t heard anything and I expect [Premier Natalio D. Wheatley] to run this whole thing down to the wire, there is a lot of work (CoI reforms) to be done, and he being committed to seeing this work executed, he is going to try to get as much as he can out of the way,” Hon Fraser said.

Progressives United (PU) was officially launched by Hon Fraser on January 11, 2019, in Sea Cows Bay on the main island of Tortola.

According to the group’s 2019 manifesto, the mission is to endeavor to commit talents to the enunciation of the Rights and Privileges of Virgin Islanders and further protect and defend the right of every individual living within the Virgin Islands to a life that is free from all forms of discrimination.

PU's 2019 candidates included Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), Dirk L. Waters, Verna V. Smith, Stephanie A. Brewley, Vincent G. Scatliffe and Rajah A. Smith.
