Rebels & VG United maul opponents in latest National League action

Whilst both One Love FC and Sugar Boys FC dropped points at the weekend in the National League, Rebels FC and VG United recorded resounding victories to apply some pressure on the top two.
Action got underway on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at East End/Long Look with Wolues FC breaking One Love’s eight game win streak with a 2-1 success.

“It was an important win for us after last week’s setback,” commented Phil Nelson.

“We played a good first half and moved the ball around better than the past few games. We had to make a few changes with injuries and had players moving positions which disrupted us a bit and One Love scored a nice goal. At 1-1 it could’ve gone either way, but Marcus scored a great goal and we held out.”

Gethin Jones scored from a set piece to put the Wolues a goal to the good in the 33rd minute before Collin Lavia equalised for One Love just after the half time break, Marcus Robinson scored what turned out to be the winner in the 69th minute.

“It was a good game, but we were reduced in numbers by injury and if we had taken our chances , we would probably have come out victorious,” noted One Love’s Mark Savage.

Rebels whip Positive 10-0

Also on Saturday, Rebels reasserted themselves as serious contenders in the title race with a 10-0 romp against Positive FC.

“It was a great game!” noted Rebels coach, Latoya Sue.

“The team stuck to the plan and we had an aim to see how many goals we would like to accomplish, which the team actually achieved. It's always a satisfying feeling for me to not only see the team win but to see them have fun doing it, but we have some competitive games ahead of us, so will have to keep the same team energy as we prepare for them.”

The goals came from Johari Lacey, who became the current Golden Boot leader, scoring his fifteenth goal of the season, whilst scoring a quadruple, Ervince Lockhart added a double as did Kelvin Glasgow and both Sheldon Harry and Curtly Peters also found the back of the net.

On Sunday, February 19, 2023, the Islanders FC handed Panthers FC a 5-1 defeat and possibly saved their season from being their worst on record as Martino Rossier scored twice, and further goals came from Shemar Lawden, Enrico Bowens and Antonio Rodney. Jhon Samuel scored the consolation for Panthers.

Lion Heart FC then held the Sugar Boys to a 1-1 tie as Lennox Reid scored deep into added time at the end of the first half to cancel out Derol Redheads opener for the Sugar Boys.

VG dispose of Old Madrid 8-0

To round out the weekend and playing in front of their own fans on the Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground, VG United repeated the scoreline from the revers fixture when the beat Old Madrid FC, 8-0.

“It was a game we had intended to try and score heavily in,” stated VG coach, Jermain Abrams.

“We need to get on a streak to stay in touch at the top and our strategy worked. No disrespect to our opponents, who definitely came to play, but we cooled their heat and it was good to see the scoring spread around. Congratulations to Joel Mars on his first senior hattrick and we will aim to keep the momentum going for the rest of the season. The result will boost our confidence and anything can happen in the race for the championship.”

The goal scorers for VG United were Joel Mars in the 10th, 34th and 50th minutes, Kijuan Nimblett in the 22nd, Adrian Adams in the 42nd and 56th, Jadon Abrams from the penalty spot in the 47th and T'Khoy Morton in the 61st minute.
