Representing the people remains a 'humbling role'- Hon Fraser

“Being in politics is not easy,” are some of the words of senior legislator Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) on having one of the longest runs as a politician in the Virgin Islands (VI), with a total of 22 years.

For Hon Fraser, who has represented the 3rd Electoral District in the VI House of Assembly (HoA) since 1999, he continues a legacy that was once the responsibility of his cousin Oliver Cills and brother Earl P. Fraser, all former representatives of the third.

Speaking during the February 3, 2021, episode of Real Talk with Karia J. Christopher, right, veteran legislator Hon Julian Fraser RA said being a politician in the Virgin Islands (VI) is not an easy task; however, it remains a humbling role.

Not an easy Job - Hon Fraser

Speaking during the February 3, 2021, episode of Real Talk with Karia J. Christopher, Hon Fraser said being a politician in the Virgin Islands (VI) is not an easy task, however, it remains a humbling role, one served alongside current Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1), who has also been in the House of Assembly for a number of years.

“It shows that something the both of us are doing [is] right and something the people that we represent like about us and it's not easy to be re-elected and re-elected and re-elected, so you make sure that you don't disappoint, that's one thing I try to do.”

Focusing on his ‘stronghold’ as a representative of the Third Electoral District, Hon Fraser agreed that he will be the representative until he does not want the job.

Taking the job seriously

“I do everything that I think a politician should do especially one who wishes to be re-elected. Today, I do the same thing I've been doing [for] 22 years,”

Hon Fraser, who represents Progressives United (PU), continued, “I think when I first got elected I was full of energy, all excited, eager to please and I think I did that my first time. It got a little rougher as time went on, changes of government, but after a while, you begin to learn the various techniques and use them to advantage,” he said.

According to the veteran legislator, he is working now as hard as he did when he was in the first phases of his political career and lashed back at detractors who accused him of not doing enough.

With several essential projects being executed in the Third District recently, Hon Julian Fraser RA was moved to admit that in just two years of the Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) led Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government, more is being done for the Third District than when the National Democratic Party (NDP) was in power.

Hon Fraser challenges critics

“There are people who run around saying that I have done nothing, I'm not doing anything and I challenge them to show me another district where something is happening that's not happening in my district and all the other good things.

“It's not easy right now with the situation that we face with [COVID-19] and three years ago, being in politics. It is not easy,” Hon Fraser said.

With several essential projects being executed in the Third District recently, Hon Fraser was moved to admit that in just two years of the Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) led Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government, more is being done for the Third District than when the National Democratic Party (NDP) was in power.

“I can say this, that for the last two years I was able to deliver to my people what I couldn't deliver for the last 8 prior,” he had said at the Second Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

“And it's not because I wasn't trying, but maybe because there were forces that were designed to insist, to ensure, that things didn't happen,” the experienced legislator had opined.
