US, Britain, Canada Accuse Russia of Interference in Moldova’s Election
The United States, Britain, and Canada have accused Russia of trying to influence Moldova's upcoming presidential election in October. The allegations include spreading disinformation to undermine President Maia Sandu and inciting protests if a pro-Moscow candidate loses. Moldova has condemned Russia’s interference and vowed to resist these efforts.
On June 14, 2024, the United States, Britain, and Canada accused Russia of attempting to manipulate Moldova's presidential election scheduled for October.
According to a statement released by the US State Department, Russia is spreading disinformation and propaganda to undermine Moldova’s pro-Western President Maia Sandu and incite protests if a pro-Moscow candidate loses.
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed gratitude for the support from the allies and vowed to resist Russia's efforts.
The allies also highlighted Russia's broader attempts to subvert democratic elections globally.
The Russian embassy in Washington has not commented on the allegations.
The United States recently imposed sanctions on Yevgenia Gutul, a pro-Russia governor in Moldova, accusing her of financing the now-banned Shor Party with Russian funds.
Moldovan authorities have condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and expelled Russian diplomats over accusations of destabilizing efforts.
