Spotify Expands AI-Driven ‘Prompted Playlists’ Feature to the United Kingdom and Other Markets

Music streaming service rolls out its advanced text-prompt playlist generation tool to Premium users in the UK, Ireland, Australia and Sweden
Spotify has commenced the international rollout of its artificial intelligence-powered playlist generation tool, known as Prompted Playlists, making it available to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and Sweden.

The expansion follows earlier launches in New Zealand, the United States and Canada as part of the company’s broader strategy to deepen personalization and listener control across its music platform.

The Prompted Playlists feature enables users to create custom playlists by entering natural-language descriptions of the mood, theme, activity or musical inspiration they want.

Rather than manually selecting individual songs or artists, subscribers can simply describe the type of music they want to hear — from specific genres and eras to particular vibes or personal memories — and the AI will assemble a playlist that reflects that prompt along with the user’s listening history and current cultural trends.

Each generated playlist may include contextual one-liners explaining why particular tracks were selected.

To use the feature, listeners tap “Create” in the app, choose “Prompted Playlist,” and enter any prompt in English.

Prompts can be broad — such as specifying a desired mood or era — or highly detailed, referencing instruments, themes, activities or even desired inclusion of new music versus tracks already in a user’s library.

The feature offers optional scheduling for daily or weekly refreshes so that playlists continue to evolve with changing preferences.

Spotify executives describe Prompted Playlists as a significant evolution in listener agency, allowing users to “steer the algorithm” with their own words and intentions rather than passively receiving algorithm-generated suggestions.

The company has positioned the tool as a major advance in personalisation, reflecting both individual listening histories and broader patterns in music culture and trends.

Early tests of Prompted Playlists have shown strong engagement, with users generating a wide range of bespoke playlists tailored to activities like workouts, study sessions and social gatherings.

Spotify’s global expansion of the feature underlines the company’s commitment to innovation in the music streaming space and to leveraging artificial intelligence to enrich user experience.
