Starmer Defends UK Role in Iran Conflict After Renewed Criticism from President Trump

British prime minister says decisions were made in the national interest as Washington presses allies for stronger action against Iran
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended his government’s approach to the escalating conflict involving Iran, insisting that the decisions taken by the United Kingdom were “right for the country” even as criticism from United States President Donald Trump intensified overnight.

Speaking after fresh remarks from Washington, Starmer said his government had carefully weighed national security, international law and Britain’s alliance commitments before determining its position on military operations connected to the crisis.

He stressed that the United Kingdom’s response was guided by what ministers believed to be the best course for protecting British interests and maintaining stability.

President Trump, who has adopted a firm posture toward Tehran and warned that further military action could follow if Iranian threats persist, has publicly urged allied governments to take a stronger stance against Iran’s missile capabilities and regional activities.

His administration has argued that decisive measures are necessary to deter further attacks on allied forces and infrastructure across the Middle East.

The disagreement highlights growing tension among Western governments over how far to escalate military involvement as the conflict widens.

While Washington has reinforced its military presence and signaled readiness for additional strikes against Iranian targets, Britain has focused on balancing diplomatic engagement with defensive preparations.

Starmer said the United Kingdom remained committed to working closely with international partners, including the United States, but emphasized that British policy decisions must ultimately reflect the country’s own strategic assessment.

He reiterated that the government’s priority is safeguarding British personnel, maintaining regional stability and preventing further escalation.

British officials have also pointed to the legal considerations surrounding any military response, noting that actions taken by the United Kingdom must align with international law and established frameworks governing the use of force.

The government has said it will continue to monitor developments closely while coordinating with allies.

The debate comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to reverberate across global politics and financial markets.

Energy prices, security concerns and diplomatic relations have all been affected by the unfolding confrontation.

Despite the criticism from Washington, Starmer maintained that Britain’s decisions were measured and responsible, arguing that careful judgment is essential when dealing with conflicts that carry the potential for far-reaching consequences.
