Starmer Interested in Italy's Albania Asylum Plan: Meloni
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reported that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is very interested in Italy's plan to process asylum applications offshore in Albania. The UK will contribute four million pounds to support Italy's migration strategy. There were also announcements of two major Italian investments in the UK worth almost five hundred million pounds.
During a press conference in Rome, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed her government's plan to process asylum applications offshore in Albania, noting that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed significant interest in the strategy.
The plan aims to handle asylum requests made by migrants disembarking in Italy or elsewhere in the EU by processing them in Albania, a concept that has yet to be implemented but is expected to start in a few weeks.
The UK will also contribute four million pounds to Italy's 'Rome Process' project, which tackles the root causes of irregular migration.
While Starmer emphasized the importance of learning from Italy's approach to migration, human rights organizations like Amnesty International have criticized similar strategies as being in violation of international law.
The conference also saw announcements of two significant Italian investments in the UK valued at nearly five hundred million pounds.
These investments aim to support job creation and economic growth in both nations.
