Successful CARIFTA Games team to receive a ‘BVILove Welcome Home’ today

The [British] Virgin Islands team that finished third at the 49th CARIFTA Games in Kingston, Jamaica will be returning home today, April 19, 2022, to a ‘BVILove Welcome’.

The BVILove Welcome Home Event has been organised by Junior Minister for Tourism Hon Sharie B. De Castro, in collaboration with the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission (BVITB&FC), and will be held at 6:00 pm at Sir Olva Georges Plaza in Road Town.

The public is invited to bring VI flags and VI pride to the event.

The VI won 4 gold medals, 2 silver and a bronze to finish third at the 49th CARIFTA Games, behind winners Jamaica and The Bahamas.

Hodge named Most Outstanding Athlete of 49th CARIFTA Games


Three of the gold medals were won by the athlete that became the talk of the Games, Adaejah T. Hodge, who triumphed in the 100 and 200 metres and Long Jump in the U17 Division.

Hodge was awarded the Austin Sealy Trophy for the Most Outstanding Athlete of the games.

She is the first athlete from the Virgin Islands to win the coveted award and joins a long list of distinguished athletes to have won it, including Olympic gold medallists Usain St Leo Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown, kerani James and Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

Virgin Islands News Online can confirm; however, that Hodge will not be part of the delegation returning to the VI this afternoon. Hodge attends school in the United States.

Other medal winners


Meanwhile, the other gold medal for the Virgin Islands was captured by Savianna Joseph in the Girls U17 Shot Put.

Silver medals were won by A’Keela McMaster in the Girls Under 20 Heptathlon and the quartet of Kaelyaah Liburd, Kenyata Grate, Akrisa Eristee and A’Keela McMaster in the Girls U20 4x400m Relay.

The lone bronze medal was secured by Jah’Kyla Morton in the Girls U17 High Jump.
