Sugar Boys & Panthers win; Islanders suffer another National League defeat

The Sugar Boys made sure of another three points as they overcame Old Madrid FC 4-1, in the BVIFA National League on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at East End /Long Look, but all their title rivals also won.

Super Sunday’s feature game saw the Panthers FC overcome the unusually inconsistent Islanders FC with a 4-2 victory.

Panthers vs Islanders

Apart from the opening goal, which came in the 30th minute from the boot of Wayne Phillips and gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead, all the goals came late in the second half as Nigel Sanderson doubled the Panthers advantage in the 70th minute before DeAndre Rodgers pulled one back for the Islanders in the 79th minute.

Phillips’ second goal in the 85th minute restored the two-goal lead, but Romario Carlton Dennie made sure of a thrilling finish as he scored in the 5th minute of added time to make it 3-2. However, Sanderson made sure of the points with his second and the Panthers fourth just a minute later.

“We played a very aggressive game,” commented Phillip. “I came in and did my thing as part of a three-man attack and we never gave the Islanders a chance to settle. We stuck to our plan and the goals that our performance deserved eventually came.”

The Panthers are now unbeaten in their last four games and sit two points above the Rebels in second place in the standings, with 22 points. However, the Sugar Boys have 26 points and two games in hand.

Sugar Boys beat Old Madrid 4-1

The table-toppers had four different goal scorers, testament to their all-around strength and never gave Old Madrid a sniff of an upset. German Gonzalez (7th min), Mohammed Kachour (49th), Derol Redhead (68th) and Alejandro Sanchez (72nd) all found the back of the net and it wasn’t until the 86th minute that Fitzroy Daley gave the scoreline a modicum of respect.

The Rebels, who have now garnered 16 points out of a possible 18 in 2022, having only secured 4 points out of their first six games of the season, comfortably dispatched the struggling One Caribbean FC side, 5-2, mainly thanks to VI National Youth player Johari Lacey.

Lacey scored in the 8th, 40th and 45th minutes to complete a remarkable hat trick in the first half that also saw Curtly Peters score as the Rebels went into the break four goals to the good.

The second half paled in comparison, but conceding two late goals, firstly to Adrian Padilla (70th min) and then to Gethin Jones (80th), woke the Rebels from the slumber and another BVIFA Youth product, Denvin Jones, smashed home the 5th.

“It was a good result for us but not a good game,” commented Lenon Audain of the Rebels.

“Playing six weeks in a row has taken its toll and several of our players are suffering from injury or fatigue. However, the youngsters, Lacey, with his hat trick, and Jones did well. It was especially pleasing to see Jones return from a layoff and play so well.”
