Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Suspended Amid Investigation Into Misconduct

Jason Hogg, Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, faces inquiry over alleged investigation lapses related to data retention by a former officer.
The Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, Jason Hogg, has been suspended from his post, following an investigation initiated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into allegations of gross misconduct.

The inquiry centers on concerns that Mr. Hogg, along with another senior officer, failed to adequately investigate claims that a former senior Thames Valley Police officer retained sensitive police information after their departure from the force.

The announcement, made by Matthew Barber, Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, stated that Mr. Hogg’s suspension was effective immediately.

Barber outlined that the investigation's focal point is 'alleged breaches of the standards of professional behaviour,' emphasizing a perceived failure in duties and responsibilities alongside a 'lack of honesty and integrity.'

Despite the gravity of the allegations, the IOPC has clarified that, thus far, no criminal offences have been identified involving Mr. Hogg.

According to Steve Noonan, Director of Operations at IOPC, the investigation, which commenced in April 2023, examines potential gross misconduct related to breaches of professional standards, particularly concerning honesty, integrity, duties, and responsibilities.

While disciplinary proceedings have not been initiated, the IOPC stresses that the conclusion of their investigation will determine if any officers should face such proceedings.

Additionally, the IOPC has concluded a separate inquiry into the former senior Thames Valley Police officer’s retention of sensitive information, with findings delivered to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in December for evaluation of potential criminal charges under the Data Protection Act and misconduct in public office.

In response to the unfolding events, Acting Chief Constable Ben Snuggs is currently at the helm of Thames Valley Police.

Snuggs reassured the community that the police force remains committed to its duties of serving, protecting, and responding to the needs of the community.

Matthew Barber reminded the public that the suspension 'is a neutral act,' stressing that it should not imply any assumption of guilt.

Barber encouraged the IOPC to expedite their investigation for a timely resolution.

Despite the suspension's unsettling impact on the Thames Valley Police community, he reiterated the importance of due process in addressing serious allegations.

As the investigation progresses, Thames Valley Police refrain from commenting further on the matter, maintaining focus on their ongoing commitment to public service.
