Tips to stymie scammers amid target on BVI residents
Amid reports about scamming activities happening in the BVI, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has released some tips on how to reduce the risk of falling victim to scams.
First thing’s first, immediately terminate the call if you receive any requests from unknown individuals demanding monies.
If demanded, do not send any monies to anyone for any reason.
The police is further advising persons to not give out sensitive information to anyone. And if you have been contacted by a suspected scammer, update your device’s security by first changing your passwords.
The RVIPF said in a statement this week that it has been receiving complaints from the public about fraudulent requests.
“The complainants reported that telephone calls and Whatsapp messages were received from unknown foreign and local numbers demanding that money be sent. Additionally, threats were made to the complainants if the monies were not received,” the police stated.
Further commenting on the matter police superintendent, St Clair Amory said: “We are doing everything in our power to track the persons responsible for these scams to prevent any further such incidents”, he stated. Should you receive any requests of this nature, please report it immediately to the police and your financial institution.
