Tramp, Parade Cancelled Following COVID-19 Spike

Tramp, Parade Cancelled Following COVID-19 Spike

The two largest crowd-drawing events on the Emancipation Festival calendar – the rise and shine tramp along with the parades – have been pulled from this year’s festivities following the recent spike in COVID-19 cases that are closing in on the 100 active cases mark in the territory.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Culture, Dr. Natalio Wheatley, told BVI Platinum on July 1 that in consultation with the Minister of Health and considering the current spread of COVID-19 and the need to contain it, “we decided to cancel events, such as the parade and rise and shine tramp that could potentially be super-spreaders of the virus.”

The Minister said further details on the exact form festival would take will be forthcoming shortly. The bulk of the Festival activities are slated for August 1st to the 3rd.

Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Carvin Malone told JTV in an interview yesterday that “One has to be simply mindful of what we are seeing,” he said, referring to the 91 active cases.

He continued: “In fact, we are going to get together with the Minister of Culture because clearly the activities that we had planned in terms of J'ouvert, and tramps and the parades, those are definitely out.”
